The forms and ways of the argumentative text:
the general lines.
Arguing is an essential practice for any speech. Whoever speaks or writes presents their own opinion regarding a problem or a starting situation; he explains it, demonstrates it, defends it, refutes a thought different from his point of view. An argumentative text requires, primarily, a change of mentality: structuring ideas and interpretations through premises, reasoning, articulations. It is a work that starts from oneself, rather than from writing. The habit of composing texts of this type could create better citizens; who reflect before speaking and acting, and who build their thoughts piece by piece.
It is necessary not to use words as clubs: every statement requires convincing explanations. A good rule, therefore, is to avoid strong, simplifying and generic statements: it is better to use statements that start from it might be thought, probably, the facts lead us to believe, it is deduced that, and similar. The objective must be to persuade the reader/interlocutor of your good reasons; don't throw words in his face like slaps that terrify him.
The ambition is, at the same time, humble and elevated: «to express precise ideas that use logical procedures, as well as narratively effective ones, to ensure that the reader shares the respective points of view» (Serianni, Read write argue).
Building a correct and effective argument requires the presentation of data and information that must be chosen with care and attention, critically selecting the sources, paying attention to the language, rhetoric and context. It is then necessary to use adequate linguistic tools and structure the text with intelligence and coherence, resorting to the tools of rhetoric and, above all, common sense. Therefore, introduce the topic well, explain your reasons and interpretations, and conclude.
The precision of language, the critical reading of information, the rational concatenation of thoughts are not only indispensable requirements for the construction of any opinion writing, but also good habits of social life.
