An application I designed and wrote entirely myself: it runs as a worker on serverlessinfrastructure, it has no database of its own and at every request it queries and cross-references the sources (an archive of notes and projects, mail, the calendar, a library, a press review with a voice reader), returning data computed on the fly. It includes an authenticated API through which automated agents read and write. It has no public address because it holds my own mail and archives: I mention it because it is the proof of what I can build on my own, and whoever teaches these tools should also have assembled them.

The first archive I built: the complete run of the Fiamme Verdi clandestine paper, digitised issue by issue and made searchable. The problem was editorial rather than technical – giving someone looking for a name, a date or a fact a way to reach it without already knowing where to look. Documents, biographies and a chronology of the partisan war in Valtellina and on the Mortirolo. I have kept it running since 2014 – domain, updates, security – and it was this work on the sources that produced the Marsilio chapter.

An archive site made together with students: they find the documents, write the entries and record the voices; I build the structure and teach the method. It is where web work and classroom work become the same thing. The classroom project is described elsewhere.

Five exhibitions built for the web rather than carried onto it: «Il Che vive!», «La Polonia di Solidarność», «Una storia europea chiamata Rivoluzione», «La nuova frontiera americana», «Cile 1973». Each has its own reading structure, because a room and a screen are not visited in the same way.

Designed and written for the study day I organised at the Civico Polo «A. Manzoni»: programme, speakers, materials and documents stay online after the event, which is the only serious reason to build a site for a study day at all.

The training programme for schools on European institutions and sources: I look after the digital side and am credited among the authors. Teaching how to read a European document is, quite literally, teaching how to read a source.

Two tools written for my own classes and left public: a navigable chronology of the Risorgimento and a prototype for working on a difficult text. They are here because they show what it means to build your own material instead of adapting someone else’s.

Personal sites for writers, and the cultural magazine Galápagos, which I founded. I follow the whole cycle – content architecture, development, domain and hosting, updates and security – on the principle that for an archive or an association a website is a working tool, not a shop window. Whoever commissions a site from me does not then have to find someone else to keep it alive.
